Council embarks on another recovery project

Council are continuing with recovery repairs from the August 2022 weather event, with work to build greater stormwater resilience at Glen Creek starting early April.
Flood water from the 2022 August weather event severely damaged the section of Brook Street behind Sugar Loaf Place, reducing it to one traffic lane. Contractors will install a new stormwater pipe, implement rock protection on the bank, repair the handrail and footpath, and re-establish the road to return to two lane traffic.
The project is anticipated to span approximately three months. Given the narrowness of the road, a Stop/Go traffic light system will be implemented. Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be unaffected.
Group Manager Alec Louverdis says the improvements in the Glen Creek area should give residents more confidence when Nelson experiences another weather event of the same scale.
“Installing a second stormwater pipe will help with resilience in this area, aligning with Council’s goal to build back better” he says.
“The new 1200mm pipe will sit alongside the existing 900mm pipe, a major increase to stormwater capacity for Glen Creek.”
The cost of the work is $500,000, 51% of this cost will be covered by NZTA Waka Kotahi.
