Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese says today’s announcement that Air New Zealand is reducing its fares to and from Nelson Airport is just the ticket.

The airline is shrinking its lead-in seat fares on 41 domestic routes as part of the biggest overhaul of its domestic pricing structure in more than a decade.

Fares from Nelson to either Wellington or Christchurch now start from $39 with fares to Auckland now starting from $49.

Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese says, “I applaud this move to make it easier and more affordable for people to access our beautiful region.

“It will also make more financial sense for those of us who live and work here to travel further afield.

“We have had a hugely demanding few weeks with the devastating fires, and this news is the tonic we’ve all been needing.”

The Nelson Regional Development Agency’s chief executive, Mark Rawson, has also welcomed the news.

“The Nelson Tasman region has so much to offer – from stunning natural landscapes to boutique arts and artisans, and a vibrant year-round events calendar.

“These lower fares are going to make it one step easier for our fellow New Zealanders, and overseas visitors, to experience our extraordinary region.”

Air New Zealand Head of Tourism & Regional Affairs, Reuben Levermore, says this is fantastic news for Nelson.

“Not only will it now be more affordable for locals to explore the rest of New Zealand, these fares will help bring more of the benefits of tourism to the area by encouraging visitors to discover everything Nelson has to offer.”
