Arts and events are returning to centre stage in Nelson this winter with a wide variety of artistic endeavours coming together under the banner of Ngā Toi Huatau – The Seasonal Arts.

A collaboration between Nelson City Council and Nelson’s arts and events community, Ngā Toi Huatau brings together some of the best entertainment Nelson has to offer this winter into one programme.

Beginning with the Matariki Festival on 18 July, the Ngā Toi Huatau programme of events runs through to the end of October, finishing with the Mask Carnivale in the heart of the city on 30 October.

In between, a variety of shows, exhibitions and entertainment are on offer, including the return of the Bay Landscapes Nelson Fringe Festival, beginning on 14 August.

Councillor and Community Services Committee Chair Matt Lawrey said Nelson’s arts and events community were dealt a blow by COVID-19 and the programme is just one of the ways Council is supporting the return of Nelson’s thriving arts scene.

“After the upheaval and stress of lockdown, it’s wonderful to be able to offer people a whole lot of great reasons to get together and enjoy the creativity and community spirit that Nelson is famous for.

“For a while, things were looking bleak, with events being cancelled all over the place. The very fact we can hold Ngā Toi Huatau – The Seasonal Arts shows just how strongly Nelson is bouncing back. It’s yet another reminder of how lucky we are in Aotearoa compared to so many other places around the world.”
