2:15pm Nelson Electricity update

Nelson Electricity have postponed the planned power outage scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday 14 February, from 9am to 5pm for Brook Valley residents due to the coming weather.

The planned power outage for Brook Valley residents will now take place Wednesday 22 February.

The power outage is to enable work to upgrade the high voltage cable, substation and switch for consumers in the Brook Valley.

Check Nelson Electricity's website for the full update.

1:45pm Southeastern winds expected to cause damage

The coming winds are expected to hit Nelson from the southeast.

South-eastern winds usually increase in force as they channel through the Maitai, Brook and Marsden valleys, causing damage to trees and powerlines along the way.

Please stay out of reserves, keep off of mountain bike / walking trails, and avoid areas with large trees until the weather passes and we can assess any damage.

  • Trees and branches may fall.
  • Powerlines may be damaged
  • Debris/objects may be blown around with force.

Strong winds are expected to begin around 9pm tonight (Monday 13 February) and last for 24 hours.

1:16pm Tasman Pine Forests Ltd. forests to close

Tasman Pine Forests Ltd. (TPFL) forests are closed from 5pm Monday 13 February to 8am Tuesday 14 February for all operational and recreational activity. Please do not enter.

11:00am Time to prepare

MetService New Zealand currently has an Orange Strong Wind Warning in place for the region for 24 hours from 9pm tonight (Monday 13 February).

Strong wind gusts could damage trees, powerlines and unsecured objects and structures.

Here are some things you can do to prepare:

  • Secure anything outside that could blow away: trampolines, outdoor furniture, bins, etc.
  • If your rubbish/recycling bins aren’t full, consider skipping your collection day. Secure your bins somewhere away from the wind, like the garage, if possible.
  • Stay away from parks and reserves and avoid areas with large trees.
  • Work from home and avoid being on the roads, if possible.
  • Charge batteries, torches and phones in case there is a power outage.

Southeast winds are forecast to be severe at times, with gusts reaching 120 km/h in exposed places.

Be prepared and stay safe.
