The event will take place at the Global Forest in the Maitai Valley this Saturday 22 July.

What's the Global Forest?

The Global Forest is an area along the Maitai River where new citizens are invited to plant a tree to help transform a boggy paddock into a native forest.

The area was badly damaged by the August 2022 severe weather.

With the help of volunteers, Nelson's multicultural community, and Friends of the Maitai, we're hoping to get 1500 plants into the ground on the day and 6,000 in total in the area.

If you haven't been able to make it to a planting event yet this season, they're a fun way to help protect and restore our natural environment. A BBQ will be provided for volunteers.

Please wear sturdy shoes and bring your own gloves if you plan to attend. Spades will be provided, but feel free to bring your own if you can.

When: Saturday 22 July 10:00am (Sunday 23 July is rain date).

Where: Maitai River at the Global Forest

Parking: available at site, 1.2km up Maitai Valley Road from the Sunday Hole carpark on the right. Look for the signs.

Last weekend, around 50 volunteers helped get 1200 plants in the ground at Wakapuaka.

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped.

The event was sponsored by Ministry for Primary Industries' Matariki Tu Rākau funding for memorial tree plantings and celebrated the work done by Hira School in reserves in Nelson North.

This newly planted section joins a private planting project on neighbouring properties to create a riparian margin along a section of the lower Wakapuaka River.

Well done to all involved.
