Nelson City Council will receive a total of $500,000 from the Tourism Infrastructure Fund to be split between two public toilet improvement projects.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment has allocated $250,000 each to improving the public toilets at Millers Acre by the iSite and at Tahunanui Beach.

At Tahunanui, the proposal is the replace the existing toilet block in the playground area with new facilities that will include toilets, changing rooms, and an equipment wash down area.

In Millers Acre, the proposal is build additional toilet facilities to cope with demand from visitors to the i-Site and Department of Conservation centre and bus passengers as well as customers at the other shops in the Centre and those enjoying the Maitai River Pathway.

Mayor Rachel Reese says, “It’s great to have central government support for these two important projects. Providing better facilities in these two busy locations will hugely improve the experience for all our visitors”.

“Securing this funding means that we will be able to make significant improvements to both facilities while reducing the impact on our ratepayers”.

Both projects will now move into the design phase with construction planned in the off season of 2020.
