Looking after privately-owned heritage homes and making sure they retain their heritage features can be expensive for their owners.

To recognise the higher costs of looking after a heritage building, Council offers rates remissions to owners of buildings listed as Group A or B heritage buildings in the Nelson Resource Management Plan.

Remissions of rates for heritage properties operate over a three-year cycle, with this year being the last in the current cycle.   Owners of eligible heritage-listed properties who didn’t apply during the 2018/19 or 2019/20 year will receive a letter inviting them to apply for the rating year 1 July 2020 – 30 June 2021.

Applications for heritage building rates remission close at 5pm on Friday 28 August 2020.
All heritage property owners will need to reapply next year for the 2021 to 2023 cycle.
