The upgrade of Nelson streetlights to LED technology is making great progress.

It started in March this year and so far over 2300 lights have been upgraded in the areas shown on the map.

Around 1200 more will be completed by the end of the year. The upgrade to lights on Waimea Road will happen next year to coincide with upgrades to a number of poles.

Residents in the areas where the lights have already changed will notice a white, rather than orange glow.

The New Zealand Transport Agency has made some funding available for the upgrade because of the improved safety they provide.
Other advantages include:

  • Power savings
  • Maintenance cost savings
  • Reduction in light spill
  • Environmental benefits from removal of old light fittings
  • Cost effectiveness

The replacement programme is for street lights only, while parks, car parks and pathways will not be upgraded as part of this project.
