There’s nothing like waking up to the beautiful sound of birdsong in the morning. If you’d like to attract more native birds to your backyard, we have just the giveaway for you!

Next Saturday (17th) Nelson City Council is giving away 400 native plants at the Nelson Market.

The plants are best suited for residential properties, with most of the plants being kowhai, although other species will be available.

There will also be staff on hand to answer any questions you may have about biodiversity such as advice on where and what to plant; pest management tips; where to source a subsidised back yard trap ; and what you can be doing to increase the number of birds in your garden.

Our team (and trees!) will be at the Market on Montgomery Square from 8am-1pm next Saturday – get in quick, last time they were snapped up fast! (Trees are limited to one plant per household).

While these trees were purchased before the recent weather event are not suitable for hillside stabilisation, Council is separately working with landowners whose properties have been impacted by the recent flooding and slips to help restore the health and resilience of our natural environment.

If you haven’t already, get in touch with our Nelson Nature team at nelson.nature@ncc.govt.nz or call 03 546 0200.
