Alex will become the first youth board member of Big Brothers Big Sisters Nelson Tasman, an organisation which provides mentoring friendships to children in need of additional adult support.
“I’m really excited to bring the youth voice onto this board for the first time and to learn new experiences about governance from a different perspective,” Alex says.
Jenna, on the other hand, has been accepted to attend Mahindra College in India for two years, where she will study the highly regarded International Baccalaureate diploma developed by United World College and Cambridge University.
“I am looking forward to studying with people from over 90 countries over there and being exposed to lots of different ideas,” Jenna says.
She will also get to travel and volunteer in local rural villages.
Community Services Committee Chair Councillor Gaile Noonan is delighted by the achievements of members of the Nelson Youth Council, which sits under the Community Services banner.
“We are really proud of these two girls, doing some extraordinary things with their lives and the opportunity that came through the Nelson Youth Council, so we are rapt that they are willing and able to take these opportunities,” Councillor Gaile Noonan says.
