The Taurapa was lit up for the first time on 17 July, with a light display held to celebrate Matariki.

The display was a collaboration between Taurapa artist Maia Hegglun, who has been working with local school children to create images based on the theme of migration to Whakatū, and artist Klaasz Breukel, who took those images and combined them with others to make a light art display.

The Taurapa will remain lit with blue lights in recognition of Matariki and as a thank-you to our essential workers during the COVID-19 shutdown for a month.

The lights will then change colour over the course of the year to represent other kaupapa/anniversaries and seasons.
