Mayor Nick Smith led a small ceremony on Tuesday 28 November to launch Nelson City Council’s sesquicentennial logo and the opening of the play CHONA at a small ceremony at Founders Heritage Park.

Council officially marks its 150th anniversary on 30 March 2024, but the commemorations have started a little early to support the opening of the play – a fast-paced overview of Nelson’s history with a comedic bent – which runs from 1 – 10 December at Founders Heritage Park.

More sesquicentennial events will be announced throughout the next year, with commemorations finishing in 2025 with the publication of an anniversary book covering the period between 1974–2024. The book follows on from two previous anniversary publications in 1924 and 1974.
