Nelson City Council is hosting the Matariki Festival, Te Huihui-o-Matariki 2023 in collaboration with Te Tauihu o Te Waka-a-Maui Māori Culture Council and Te Kotahi o Te Tauihu Charitable Trust.

This year’s event, at the Trafalgar Centre and Rutherford Park, will kick-off with Taka Kara Tīpuna, the Regional Secondary School Kapa Haka Competitions from 9am – 3pm. Tickets can be purchased form Eventbrite.

The Matariki Market will open from 5pm – 9pm, offering a diverse range of food as well as Māori arts and crafts for sale.
 
Performances by special guests Maaka Fiso, Awhimai Fraser and the Modern Māori Quartet and more will begin at 5pm and finish at 9pm. Koha will be collected on entry to the evening's entertainment, and will be donated to a local charity.

Among the performers in the Taka Kara Tīpuna are Pūaha Te Tai (Nayland College), Ngā Aho Rau (Nelson College for Boys and Nelson College for Girls), Ngā Taiohi o Wairau Kapahaka (Marlborough Girls' College and Marlborough Boys' College, Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Tuia te Matangi, Te Mātū (Motueka High School) and Tapawera Area School.

Vendors and/or  community groups, small businesses and individuals are invited to sell traditional arts & crafts, and a variety of culturally diverse traditional kai at the Mākete Pō (night market).
