Parks Week 2024 is just around the corner, running from 3 to 10 March, and to celebrate, we are inviting the community to take part in the Parks Week Haiku Challenge.

A haiku is a simple, three-line poem following a 5-7-5 syllable structure, and we are challenging residents of all ages to write one inspired by their favourite Nelson park, trail, or reserve.

How to enter

  • Open to Nelson residents
  • Write a haiku about a Nelson park, trail, or reserve.
  • Post your haiku as a comment on any of our daily Parks Week posts (3-10 March) on Facebook or Instagram.
  • You are welcome to share a photo with your haiku to bring your words to life.
  • If you would like to get creative, handwritten and decorated haikus can be dropped off at the Customer Service Centre or any Nelson Public Library branch (please leave a name and contact details to be eligible for a prize).
  • Prizes are up for grabs.

Three winners will be selected by Nelson Public Libraries staff, with prizes including:

  • A Family Pass to Brook Waimārama Sanctuary (2 adults + 3 children).
  • A Group Pass to Natureland Wildlife Trust (2 adults + 2 children).
  • A 1-hour kayak or stand-up paddleboard hire for two with Moana SUP & Surf.

When will the winners be announced?

Winners will be announced the week of 10 March, and throughout the challenge, some of our favourite haikus will be shared on social media.

This is a great opportunity to reflect on what makes Nelson’s parks special and express it in a creative way.

Get ready to take part – the first haikus will be shared on 3 March.
