You are invited to join Nelson Mayor Nick Smith, councillors and Nelson City Council staff at an informal ceremony and planting of a tōtara tree this Saturday (6 May) at 10am at Queens Gardens to mark the coronation of His Majesty Charles III.

Saturday’s event is part of He Rā Rākau Tītapu – King Charles III Coronation Plantings – a partnership between Trees That Count and the Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC) that will see more than 100,000 native trees planted to celebrate the Coronation throughout New Zealand.

Mayor Nick says while Saturday’s event will be a world away from the pomp and ceremony of the Coronation in London, it is a fitting way to acknowledge a new King who has been vocal on environmental issues.

“The coronation of our new monarch after 70 years is a significant milestone in Nelson’s history. Queen Elizabeth II gave incredible service and I’m confident her son will, equally, be a voice for good in the world. Queens Gardens is a fitting place for this coronation planting and we welcome Nelsonians joining us for this modest event,” Mayor Nick says.
