What do these triangles mean?

It’s not the Bermuda triangle, it’s a parking triangle. These white painted lines are used on the side of roads to indicate where there may not be room for normal size vehicles to park without blocking driveways.

Rather than painting yellow no stopping lines, Council may choose to use these markings to let motorists know that a particular parking space does not meet the minimum parking requirements for normal sized vehicles, but may still be suitable for smaller vehicles or motorbikes.

On-street parking is valuable and highly utilised in some areas around the city, so rather than preventing parking altogether, Council will look at whether a parking triangle is the more appropriate option.

The NZ Road User Rules prohibits parking closer than one metre to any driveway entrance, so be aware of the length of your vehicle and check that you are not blocking any driveways to nearby properties/businesses.
